I have a confession to make. I am sure you will be shocked when I reveal it, unless that is, you were in Key West with me last month. Then it will make total sense…
I am hoarding tequila!
There, I said it. It is true. But before you judge me, I want you to know that I have the moderately priced Cabo and Espolon and not the preferred Don Julio or Patron. I don’t want you to think I am gluttonous or fiscally irresponsible.
You may be asking yourself why I am hoarding tequila? Good question and I had no reasonable explanation. So, I did what every thought provoking American does, I googled it. But, I did not put tequila in my search. No. I don’t want that to remain in my search history. I put “toilet paper” because if we are being really honest here, we are all hoarding toilet paper at this time. The Google spies wouldn’t bat an eyelash at a “hoarding toilet paper” search.
According to Jay L. Zagorsky, “hoarding makes people feel secure…when faced with a novel disease over which all of us have little or no control. However, we can control things like having enough toilet paper in case we get quarantined.” He also mentions that we may be biologically wired to hoard, referring to how animals tend to hoard things. Here is the link to his article. Why Are People Hoarding Toilet Paper? It makes for an informative read and definitely made me feel better about my need to have tequila in the house.
So why do I have tequila? In addition to my biological wiring to hoard and need for control, my own psychoanalysis tells me that I have it because the last few times I drank tequila were happy ones. I was surrounded by close friends in beautiful Key West. I didn’t have a care in the world that week. No COVID-19, no work from home, no missing my family, students, friends and colleagues, no adult children and husband around me 24-7. It was just me and Patron! (Yes, I drank Patron and Don Julio that week. Life is too short to drink cheap tequila while on vacation!) I have tequila to remind me of stress-free times of leisure. I think we all need that reminder at this time, don’t you?
Besides toilet paper, what are you fully stocked up on? What item or items did you run to the store to make sure you had plenty of in the house? If you are brave enough, please share why you have it. If you are introspective enough, you may realize that your hoarding may also be a reminder of a happier, more carefree time. Or, it may just be that you are afraid that you will actually run out of that item and literally be caught without a “square to spare.” In either case, please feel free to share it. And remember…dream so big that your thoughts turn into your memories!
